539 local levels fully electrified under national grid, 18 yet to be covered

Out of 753 local levels of Nepal, 539 local levels have substantially been electrified. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, 196 local levels have been partially electrified.

The NEA has not been able to supply electricity through the national transmission system to 18 local levels.

Although the national grid has not reached, residents of 18 local levels are consuming electricity from micro-hydro and solar energy plants.

According to the Electrification Statistics, 2081, prepared by the NEA after a detailed study of rural municipalities and municipal wards across the country, electricity has reached to 99 per cent of the total population.

The electricity customers, including the community, have reached 5.95 million so far, according to the NEA.

About 97 per cent of the population with access to power supply are consuming electricity from the national grid and 2 per cent are consuming electricity off-grid, including micro-hydro and solar plants. According to the NEA, out of 753 local levels, 590 local levels have been electrified from 95 to 100 per cent while 72 local levels have been electrified up to 75-95 per cent.

Similarly, 33 per cent of local levels have been electrified up to 50-75 per cent, 26 local levels up to 25-50 per cent and 32 local levels up to 0-25 per cent.

Managing Director of NEA Kul Man Ghising said that all preparations are being made to realise the Nepal government's announcement to provide reliable and quality electricity service to all Nepali homes within the current fiscal year.

“In the fiscal year 2015/16, electrification was only 58 per cent, now reaching 99 per cent is an important achievement made during this period. The Authority itself is reaching the poor slums looking for houses without electricity, improving and expanding the system for reliable and quality electricity supply in the places where electricity is available. And we are working with high priority to supply electricity to the left-out areas,” said Ghising.

"We are working to provide electricity to all households in the geographically difficult and remote hilly and mountain districts of the Karnali and Sudurpashchim Provinces within one year. For this, we have managed the budget and selected contractors and started the work,” he said.

The Authority has already started the work by selecting the contractors for electrification in the hilly districts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim Province by taking concessional loans of 220 million US dollars from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

In addition, Ghising said that funds have been raised to expand electricity access to other areas by setting aside a portion of the profits earned by the Authority and government investment.

Madhes fully electrified, Karnali lowest at 74% electrification

Out of seven provinces, 100 per cent of electrification has been done in Madhes while it is 99.30 per cent in Koshi, 99.97 per cent in Bagmati and 99.40 per cent in Gandaki and 98.49 per cent in Lumbini.

Karnali Province has the lowest electrification only at 74.38 per cent while 86.58 per cent electrification has been completed in Sudurpashchim Province.

Out of 77 districts, the national transmission grid has not reached in Humla district. In Humla, electricity has been supplied from micro-hydro and solar energy.

Out of 77 districts, 56 districts have 95 to 100 per cent electrification. About 75-95 per cent electrification has been completed in 10 districts, 50-75 per cent in five districts and 25-50 per cent in six districts.

Among the 14 districts of Koshi Province, more than 95 per cent electrification has been done in districts other than Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha.

About 89.04 per cent electrification has been completed in Solukhumbu and 93.99 per cent in Sankhuwasabha. The cent per cent electrification has been done in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Dhankuta.
